TTP Chief Noor Wali Mehsud Killed in Kabul Airstrike, Sources Confirm

KABUL – Noor Wali Mehsud, the leader of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), was reportedly killed in an airstrike in Kabul on Thursday night, according to multiple credible sources.

Residents of the Afghan capital reported hearing loud explosions in central Kabul, particularly near Abdulhaq Square. While the Taliban have confirmed that explosions took place and that an investigation is underway, the precise location and details of the strike remain undisclosed.

Mehsud, born on June 26, 1978, in South Waziristan's Gurguray area, had been one of Pakistan's most wanted militant leaders. He assumed leadership of the TTP in 2018 following the death of Mullah Fazlullah, becoming the fourth chief of the outlawed group.

His involvement in militant activities dates back to 2003 when he joined the Mehsud Taliban, a tribal militant faction that later merged into the TTP in 2007 under Baitullah Mehsud. Known for his operational acumen, Mehsud quickly climbed the ranks and, by 2013, was overseeing TTP’s operations in Karachi. Under his command, the group carried out extortion, kidnappings, and enforced militant justice through parallel courts.

Security analysts believe Mehsud operated from both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and held Pakistani citizenship.

Sources indicate that the airstrike targeted a specific compound in Kabul, though it remains unclear which country or group carried out the operation. The Taliban have neither confirmed Mehsud's death nor commented officially on the nature of the strike.

The timing of the incident is particularly notable, coinciding with the visit of Taliban acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to India for high-level diplomatic talks — his first since the Taliban's return to power in 2021.

Both Pakistan and India have raised concerns in recent months over the increasing presence of militant groups in Afghanistan. Islamabad has consistently accused the Taliban government of providing safe haven to TTP fighters who allegedly carry out cross-border attacks from Afghan soil — allegations that the Taliban strongly deny.

If confirmed, Mehsud’s death would mark a major blow to the TTP, which has been responsible for a series of deadly attacks in Pakistan and remains a key concern for regional security stakeholders.
